NANTUCKET · AN ENGAGEMENT WEEKEND

A few days in Nantucket.
A complete story.

An engagement brought everyone to the island. The hours around it gave us a book filled with life.

I went to Nantucket a year before the wedding and stayed in the house with the family. Over the course of the engagement weekend, I photographed much more than the engagement pictures. There was coffee in the morning, lunch together, shopping for dinner, and time spent making it.

Those hours matter to me. They give the photographs a sense of the people, the place, and what it felt like to be there together. The occasion is part of the story. So is everything that happens around it.

Being there for the in-between.

Staying in the house meant I was there as the day unfolded. We made engagement photographs at different times throughout the weekend, alongside the quieter, unplanned moments of family life.

This is the approach I bring when I accompany a family on a vacation: listening, following the pace of the day, and knowing when to photograph and when to give people space. The photographs grow out of the experience you are already having.

The island has a place in the book, too.

I also make photographs of the surroundings. A waterfront, a boat, or a detail noticed on a walk can bring back a whole part of the day. These images give the people photographs their setting and give the book room to breathe.

On Nantucket, that meant looking beyond the portraits to the island around us. The place and the people belong together. Years later, both can help you remember.

From a weekend to a finished story.

I personally select the photographs and design the book. That is where the individual moments become a sequence: the people you spent time with, the things you did, and the surroundings that made this weekend its own.

The Nantucket book shown on this site is the actual design delivered to the family. It brings client photographs and pictures of the island together, so you can see how I tell a complete story. A year after this weekend, I returned to photograph the wedding.

For a travel commission, the same care goes into a museum-quality, 10 × 13-inch book, personally designed by me and printed in the United States. I usually share the first design within two weeks of returning. The edited gallery follows after you have had time to experience the book, and you can request changes before it is printed.
